About ABC

Mission Statement:

The Association of Black Collegians shall foster an atmosphere which promotes the cultural, intellectual, and social growth of Black students at Lafayette College. We are committed to creating a community grounded in personal and communal wellness that actively combats all forms of oppression including but not limited to anti-Blackness, misogyny, xenophobia, queerphobia, classism, imperialism, and ableism.”

Values:

  1. We are honest  - to ourselves and to each other.

  2. We consistently build trust and support amongst the collective. We show up for each other in the way(s) that folks determine is best for them and treat carefully the experiences that are shared amongst our members.

  3. We see and acknowledge each other - virtually and physically, and in the fullness of our individual selves. We do not reduce each other down to a singular identity and purposely center those who hold multiple marginalizations.

  4. We work in collaboration and share what we know as often as possible, understanding the strength in communal knowledge and rejecting capitalistic notions of ‘the individual’.

  5.  We dedicate ourselves to living lives of personal and interpersonal wellness. In the words of Toni Cade Bambara we understand that “wholeness is no trifling matter,” and we are hopeful in the creation and execution of consistent care practices.

  6. We are committed to the creation and purpose of this organization. We understand that what we do in our four years has a direct connection to and impact on those who have come before us and those who will come after.

  7. We hold each other accountable to these values in public and in private. We challenge each other and promote individual and collective growth. We do not accept any form of prejudice, discrimination, bigotry, or oppression.
