Climate - Lauren Champagne, Class of 2019, Lafayette College

This path will explore the ways in which the larger campus climate toward queerness is created and communicated at Lafayette. Climate in this sense is conceptualized as a dynamic experience and overall attitude at Lafayette about LGBTQ+ people and issues. This kind of climate does not develop linearly or shift overnight. Rather, it is a slow process that progresses, stagnates, moves backwards, and varies across time and individual experiences. In addition, it is important to recognize that climate is not necessarily defined as inclusive or exclusive. It consists of complex relationships between attempted inclusivity, ingrained exclusivity, innate social policing, and committed social activism. This path will highlight this complexity and shed light on some of the ways in which climate is reinforced, shifted, and communicated.
