Queer Economics - Reilly Hughes, Class of 2023, Lafayette College
This pathway is structured around four key themes: domestic partner benefits, the queer workplace, queer donors, and broader implications of queer economics. Specifically, it explores how the domestic partner benefits policy has improved the competitive and inclusive work environment for LGBTQ+ individuals at the college by providing access to the same benefits as married counterparts. This interpretive path will also examine how queer-friendly spaces on campus, such as the LGBTQ+ resource center, have reduced discrimination and exclusion and promoted a sense of community and belonging.
This interpretive path investigates the contributions of queer alumni donors to the college, including funding for awards, research initiatives, and LGBTQ+ programming. These donations have allowed the college to expand its efforts in creating a more equitable and inclusive environment for all individuals, regardless of their gender identity or sexual orientation. A key takeaway is the role queer economics can play in promoting DEI in higher education and business. This will contribute to the current understanding of queer economics and provide practical recommendations for policymakers and business leaders to adopt similar policies in other institutions, creating more inclusive and equitable environments for all individuals.
Overall, this path offers a comprehensive analysis of the impact of economic policies on queer individuals at Lafayette College and the role of queer economics in promoting DIE. It integrates critical thinking and writing to synthesize site content and expand the Queer Archives Project, contributing new ideas and knowledge to the field of LGBTQ+ studies.
